ABOUT US

The Elton John AIDS Foundation in the UK (EJAF) is an international non-profit organisation funding programmes that help to alleviate the physical, emotional and financial hardship of those living with, affected by or at risk of HIV/AIDS.

Sir Elton John established EJAF in the UK in 1993 with a sister organisation established in the USA in 1992 to fund programmes in North America.

EJAF was formed primarily to look after the needs of people with HIV/AIDS living in the UK. During the past fourteen years, the organisation has extended the scope of its work and now funds in 17 countries over 4 continents. To date it has raised over £50 million* which has been used to support more than 1,100 projects reaching millions of people infected, affected or at risk of HIV/AIDS including:

  • Providing information about HIV/AIDS to over 150 million people around the globe, including 5 million children.
  • Giving 185,000 people with AIDS in South Africa, often dying alone and in pain, proper palliative care.
  • Putting 10,000 adults on antiretroviral treatment in Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Supporting more than 57,000 people in need to access income generation programmes, vocational training, grants or loans.
  • Enabling over 200,000 people living with HIV/AIDS to be supported through positive people’s groups & networks

EJAF is proud of its record of championing innovative programmes, including helping to spearhead the global expansion of HIV/AIDS treatment & care, most recently paediatric antiretroviral treatment; being one of the first grant makers in the world to acknowledge the needs of men who have sex with men (MSM) in countries where homosexuality is still illegal; supporting needle exchange and methadone substitution programmes for injecting drug users living with or at risk of HIV/AIDS.

The office in London has overheads running at just under 5% and is manned by three full-time and six part-time members of staff, helped by two volunteers.

EJAF fundraises in a number of ways, including event fundraising, arts related exhibitions, charity-clothing sales, sponsor partnerships, sponsored events and licensed merchandise.
