EJAF-UK and EJAF-US

Is there a difference between EJAF in the UK and EJAF in the US?
EJAF exists as two separate entities: one located in the United Kingdom (Registered Charity 1017336) and the other in the United States (a 501(c)(3) organisation).  EJAF-UK and EJAF-US maintain distinct funding portfolios in order to maximize the impact of grant-making worldwide.  EJAF-UK funds projects in Africa, Asia, and Europe while EJAF-US focuses its funding on programmes in the Americas and Caribbean.  For more information about EJAF-US please visit: www.ejaf.org

FUNDRAISING

How does EJAF raise money?

EJAF actively raises funds for its work through special events, arts related exhibitions, charity-clothing sales, sponsor partnerships, sponsored events and licensed merchandise.  We also receive voluntary contributions from individuals, businesses and other Foundations.  Since their inception, EJAF-UK and EJAF-US have raised a combined total in excess of USD$220 million which has been used to support work in 55 countries around the world.  For more information on our fundraising activities please click here or email: fundraising@ejaf.com.

GRANT MAKING

How does EJAF distribute the money it raises?

EJAF provides grants to organisations that share our mission of alleviating the physical, emotional and financial hardship of those living with, affected by or at risk of HIV/AIDS.  For more information on EJAF’s grants programme please visit Our Work.

What are EJAF’s funding priorities?

EJAF’s funding is centred on five broad themes: Women & Children, Positive Lives, Livelihoods, Vulnerable Groups and Innovation.  These are the areas we feel are central to the spread of the epidemic and where we can make a real difference.  We regularly evaluate our grant-making priorities to ensure our response remains focused on the needs and challenges posed by the evolving HIV/AIDS pandemic.  Current grant priorities in each of EJAF’s programme countries are outlined in the country level grant strategies here.

What are EJAFs programme countries?

Please visit Applying for Grants for a list of current programme countries.

Does EJAF have offices in each of its programme counties?

In order to maintain its low (less than 5%) overheads and maximise the money available for programme activities, EJAF does not have field offices or in-country staff.  EJAF’s fundraising and grant programmes are managed by a small team based in London with support from in-country consultants as required.

APPLYING FOR GRANTS

Can my organisation apply for a grant?

EJAF is open to applications from not-for-profit organisations and registered charities for HIV related work in one or more of its programme countries.  Please click here to check whether you are eligible to apply.

Will EJAF support my organisation’s programme?

EJAF has developed individual grant strategies for each of its programme countries: focusing its response to maximise the impact of its funding based on the needs and context of each.  These grant strategies are available under the individual county pages of the Applying for Grants section of the website.  Please check to see whether your proposed programme would fit within one of these priority areas before applying.

How and when can I apply?

On the right-hand side of the country strategy pages (click here for the Uganda example) you will find a downloadable Concept Note application form which includes instructions on how to complete and submit your form to EJAF.  We accept Concept Notes throughout the year and there are no set deadlines for submission.

What happens after I have applied?

You will receive an automatic response from grants@ejaf.com outlining the Concept Note review process.  EJAF aims to respond to all Concept Note applications within 6 weeks, with those that are successful invited to submit a full application.  Details of EJAF’s full application process, including application forms and timeframes will be forwarded to successful applicants at this time.

We will also inform unsuccessful applicants of the outcome of their Concept Notes; however, due to the volume of applications we receive, we are regrettably not able to provide individual feedback on unsuccessful submissions.

My charity is based in a country that isn’t listed as one of EJAF’s current programme countries, will I be able to apply for a grant in future?

EJAF undertakes a strategic review of its programme countries every 3 years.  The review process is complex and among many other factors, our Board of Trustees considers the latest empirical data on the spread and severity of HIV infections worldwide.  A short list of countries is then selected that EJAF believes it is practical to fund in and in which its grants will achieve the greatest impact.  Programme countries will be reviewed at the end of 2010 with the next strategic cycle beginning in 2011.

I am HIV-positive and require financial assistance, can EJAF help?

Whilst much of our funding is focused on enhancing outcomes for individuals by supporting organisations to deliver a wide range of services, EJAF does not provide grants directly to individuals.  For assistance in the UK please contact the Terrence Higgins Trust through their website at www.tht.org.uk or via their helpline on 0845 12 21 200.
