DAVID FURNISH IN SOUTH AFRICA
JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2009
Trustee David Furnish has been in the Western Cape following up on projects funded by EJAF. He toured the site in Vrygrond where EJAF is funding a new community centre for parents and children with HIV/AIDS and dropped in on the Baphumelele Children’s Home in Khayleitsha to make a very special delivery.
David also spoke at the launch of a new HIV testing service for gay and bisexual men in Cape Town – Health4Men – which was designed by the Perinatal HIV Research Unit in Soweto. David stressed the importance of recognising male-to-male sex as a key route of HIV infection, highlighting the Foundation’s pioneering work in this area in Africa and Eastern Europe. Health4Men is partnering with the Western Cape Health Department to provide HIV testing, screening for sexually transmitted infections, counselling and referral for treatment where appropriate. International AIDS activist Zachie Ahmat, who also spoke at the launch hailed the service as ‘a huge breakthrough’.
