EJAF RECOGNISED AT INTERNATIONAL AIDS CONFERENCE

17 July, 2010

VIENNA, AUSTRIA

The Foundation and its partners were well represented at the International AIDS Conference in Vienna this year.

On the eve of the conference, EJAF was recognised for its work in Eastern Europe at The Life Ball gala with a donation of Euros 100,000.  This funding is designated for EJAF to support its grantee The Way Home (see Ukraine projects) to whom Life Ball awarded its Crystal of Hope .  Anne Aslett (EJAF Executive Director) received the donation on behalf of EJAF and Sergey Kostin (Director, The Way Home) was presented with his award by Life Ball Director Gery Kerszler and actress Natastia Kinski.

Bill Clinton was also honoured at the event by Estee Lauder Group President John Demsey who donated Euros 100,000 to Clinton's HIV/AIDS Health Initiative on behalf of the MAC AIDS Fund.

At the Conference itself, 15 EJAF supported partners from Cambodia, India, Kenya, South Africa, Ukraine, UK and Zambia had presentations to showcase their interventions.  Dr Mitch Besser, m2m Director recognized EJAF’s partnership for the quality of support and interaction as an example of a funder who has been most useful to his organisational development.

EJAF’s learning from the conference was that:

  1. We are an important contributor to the millennium development goal of reducing HIV related mother and child deaths;
  2. Our commitment to improve access to treatment and care for men who have sex with men (MSM) is supported by evidence that showed how vital this work is in relation to the general epidemic;
  3. Developments of more effective prevention, contribute to our programmes reducing girls vulnerability to HIV;
  4. To optimise the effectiveness of treatment EJAF plays an important role in supporting PLWHA to manage their condition.

As a member of the European Funders Group Steering Committee, Anne Aslett helped host a private meeting of funders working in the HIV/AIDS field.

Bill Gates and Annie Lennox each made keynote speeches at the event, which was held during the conference, on the importance of continued funding of HIV work, and the value of collaborative effort.  Please click here to read the full FCAA and EFG report.
