The Problem
The tiny, landlocked mountain kingdom of Lesotho is facing its own tsunami:
- Almost a quarter of its 1.8 million citizens are infected with HIV
- Over 90% of people with HIV/AIDS also have tuberculosis
- Life expectancy has been reduced to just 34 years
- Women are disproportionately infected, making up three quarters of all HIV cases in the 15-29 age group
- The number of AIDS orphans continues to grow – currently estimated at over 90,000
The government has launched an aggressive campaign to HIV test the whole population, and to scale up antiretroviral therapy (ART), particularly for children and pregnant women. Whilst funding is available for these goals, Lesotho’s mountainous terrain, much of which is inaccessible by road but home to 80% of the population, presents a massive challenge.
Our Response
EJAF is supporting the development of a cost effective, mobile health fleet of community health workers, nurses and doctors across a third of the country’s clinics. This will increase their productivity and the numbers reached fivefold. We have also prioritised support for women living with or at risk of HIV including: sexual health services, income and food generation for them and their children as well as legal protection from discrimination and abuse.
