Because HIV and the drugs used to treat it take such a huge toll on the body, it is essential that people with HIV have a healthy, nutritious diet. But the physical and financial challenges associated with the disease and related illnesses can get in the way of good nutrition. That’s where Food Chain steps in; it aims to ensure that lack of nutritious food does not undermine the ability of anyone living with HIV to get well or stay well.
The Food Chain has been supported by EJAF to provide nutritional support to people living with HIV throughout Greater London since 1997. During that time the organisation has grown and now has some 1,000 volunteers supported by a staff of five.
Each Sunday two individually tailored meals - one hot for immediate consumption and one cold for later - are cooked and delivered to people who are living with HIV and in poverty. These meals are nutritionally balanced, culturally acceptable and individually tailored allowing for special diets such as low cholesterol and diabetic.
In addition the Food Chain provides a Grocery Delivery Service on demand to those who are housebound with an AIDS related illness or dealing with an unanticipated emergency, such as discharge from hospital. It also gives nutritional advice and simple to follow recipes for men, women and children living with the disease.
