The mission of the Firelight Foundation is to support and advocate for the needs and rights of children who are orphaned or affected by HIV/AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa.  EJAF & Firelight joined forces in early 2006 to support child-focused, grassroots programmes by providing Small Grants to projects in Lesotho, Malawi, South Africa, Tanzania, and Zambia.

An example of the success of this collaboration is Children in Distress (CINDI) in Kalomo District, Zambia.

CINDI Kalomo forms part of a nationwide network that aims to mitigate the impact of HIV/AIDS on children in Zambia.  The organisation creates income-generating opportunities, extends educational support to vulnerable children and conducts community HIV/AIDS awareness activities.

Our grant has enabled CINDI to identify and register 23 new babies from 0-2 years born to HIV positive mothers, as shown in the main photo here. CINDI has educated these mothers on nutrition and antiretroviral treatment issues from pregnancy to the weaning stage. The programme provides food supplements for the babies at weaning stage in collaboration with Kitwe Central Hospital  and there are trained volunteers who conduct home visits to check the children's health and ensure that the food supplements are mixed correctly.

Our grant has also assisted older children to stay in school and enabled CINDI to establish a hammer mill that will generate income for the group members by grinding grain for the surrounding communities.
