| ORGANISATION: | OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL SUPPORT (OLPS) |
| AREA: | NYAZNA PROVINCE, KENYA |
| GRANT PERIOD: | 2006-2009 |
| BENEFICIARIES: | 900 PEOPLE |
Our Lady of Perpetual Support (OLPS) was established in 1992 by a group of HIV positive individuals. It operates in the Kisumu, Nyando and Bondo districts of Nyanza Province in Western Kenya where HIV prevalence rates are amongst the highest in the country (12%-18%).
OLPS provides or sponsors formal and informal education, nutritional supplements, clothing and, where necessary, shelter for 3,400 orphans. It has also set up schemes to grow food and/or generate an income for 200 people living with HIV/AIDS and their 2,400 dependents.
EJAF was impressed with its home care programme in spite of the limited capacity of the tiny day clinic in Kisumu city from which it was run. We therefore provided a one-off grant to enable OLPS to construct a new clinic with a proper pharmacy, consulting rooms, and diagnostic equipment.
This has made the management of patients’ illness both at clinic and within the community much more efficient. In just over a year it has provided:
- Medical treatment for 6,400 adults and children who are HIV positive.
- Home based care services to over 1,300 adults and children with full blown AIDS.
- It has also made HIV testing and counselling available to 1,100 people.
The clinic currently sees around 30 patients a day.
