The Mpoma Community AIDS initiative is a true example of community based support. It began with a group of infected/affected women starting a primary school for orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) in their community and grew from there.

Its aim is to mobilize the community to address the HIV/AIDS problem, particularly OVC issues, faced by Mukono District in Uganda. This heavily urbanised area, which has 2 major fishing sites, has been severely affected by the epidemic – with an infection rate one third higher than the national average.

EJAF has supported Mpoma's development and its core activities including:

Formal and informal education to OVC – there are 120 OVC currently enrolled in their primary school along with 150 fee paying children attracted by the quality of the teaching and environment.

Food security – the project grows maize to feed children a meal of porridge at school. They have also started a livestock project giving pigs and cows to needy families in order to help them sustain their households - as shown in the pictures here.

Income generation and vocational skills training - so far training 100 OVC and 50 widows in skills such as tailoring.

Psychosocial support to OVC and people living with HIV/AIDS, community mobilization and HIV/AIDS education - not only within the school but reaching out into the community as well.
