Unfortunately, there are still many HIV positive people facing extreme poverty here in the UK. EJAF supports the Crusaid Hardship Fund to help individuals in need by providing small targeted grants.
In the early days the main function of the Fund was to provide respite care and hospice placements for terminally ill people. Now, thanks to treatment advances, the Fund is also being called upon to support people to build a positive future by, for example, funding skills training to help people climb out of the poverty trap.
However, the majority of applications received are still for basic assistance with purchases such as food, bedding or a fridge to store medication at the correct temperature.
All requests are made via a referring agent, such as a social worker, and all recipients are means tested to ensure that the grants are made to those most in need. The difference a well targeted grant can make to a person in dire poverty can truly be life changing:
“Without the Hardship Fund I would still be spending all day washing my bed sheets in the bath. I sweat at night and need to wash sheets every day. The washing machine has changed my life”
