The mission of the Firelight Foundation is to support and advocate for the needs and rights of children who are orphaned or affected by HIV/AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa.  EJAF and Firelight joined forces in early 2006 to support child-focused, grassroots programmes by providing small grants to projects in Lesotho, Malawi, South Africa, Tanzania, and Zambia.

An example of the success of this collaboration is the DAO AIDS Support Group based in Malawi:

Established by six people living with HIV, DAO (Disability, Aged and Orphaned) Support Group now boasts 110 volunteer members.  DAO’s aim is to ensure that people affected or infected by HIV/AIDS learn to address and overcome the physical and emotional effects of the disease.

DAO has used their grant to improve food security for people living with HIV/AIDS and orphans & vulnerable children. It has funded the purchase of 2 treadle water pumps and fertiliser enabling DAO to increase its number of community food gardens from one to seven. These now provide food for all 1,530 registered orphans & vulnerable children as well as people livng with HIV/AIDS.

DAO is also using the grant to provide psychosocial support training for 60 young people, behaviour change counselling training for 50 volunteers, and life-skills training for 20 youth volunteers.
