Mexico has the fourth highest estimate of people living with HIV in the Americas. While the epidemic is still reasonably contained, there are alarming signs that the virus is spreading, with an annual 3% rise in infection rates, according to the Ministry of Health.
It is critically important that effective HIV/AIDS prevention programmes are implemented now, particularly amongst young people before or as they become sexually active.
IMIFAP is a Mexican charity with huge experience in teacher training and student curriculum development around sexuality and sexual health.
EJAF is supporting IMIFAP to develop a new interactive website dedicated to issues relating to sexuality and HIV/AIDS for Mexican teenagers.
The programme has secured endorsement from the National Council of AIDS who will certify teenagers that complete the online questionnaire as 'Peer AIDS Educators'.
Mexican teen idol Diego Gonzales is fronting the campaign, which also includes interactive HIV/AIDS prevention and sexuality software for use by teachers in school curricula, radio messages promoting the website, and teacher training across four states.
