THE
FOUNDATION
AT WORK

ORGANISATION:DEVELOPMENT AID FROM PEOPLE TO PEOPLE (DAPP) IN ZAMBIA
AREA:NDOLA DISTRICT, ZAMBIA
GRANT PERIOD:2007-2008
BENEFICIARIES:440 PEOPLE LIVING WITH HIV/AIDS AND 2,000 FAMILY MEMBERS

EJAF funded this programme in response to HIV positive people's concerns about food security and adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART). The programme aims to empower 440 positive people by equipping them with the knowledge, skills and materials to grow their own vegetables and herbs, by educating them in positive living skills and establishing ART adherence support mechanisms. It will do this by:

  1. Identifying/establishing 20 positive people's support groups and training 2 members from each group as trainers in positive living and the garden scheme. These trained trainers then impart knowledge gained to their support group through twice weekly meetings. ART adherence support is also provided through a “TRIO” system established through the support groups for those who need it.

  2. Each support group uses these skills to establish their own group vegetable and herb gardens. These are provided with water by a rope pump well installed by DAPP.

  3. During the 6 months it takes for the gardens to produce food DAPP distribute emergency food supplementation to those who need it. All beneficiaries and their families also receive mosquito nets, multivitamins and deworming tablets.

It is anticipated that at least 60% of the programme beneficiaries will show improved health including weight gain, less sick days and improved well being (self monitored) and that those on ART will be adhering and managing their medication well.

Each support group & food garden is intended to be self-sustaining within 1 year but they will be able to refer to the HOPE centre for any assistance required beyond this period. This is a highly replicable model to improve the health and wellbeing of people living with HIV/AIDS and their families and, if proved successful through this grant, should be able to leverage further funding for expansion.
