Lesotho has one of the worst HIV epidemics in the world with national adult prevalence ranging from 26.3%-31.7%. Although the government of Lesotho has set ambitious targets for HIV testing and treatment, geographical constraints, lack of trained personnel and limited access to drugs mean that:
For infants, this is particularly precarious. Most who are born with HIV die within the first 2 years of life without adequate medical care; and the drugs alone are not enough, without a sufficient diet, the drugs cannot work.
Partners In Health (PIH) is one of the foremost organisations delivering HIV/AIDS care in the developing world. In Lesotho, PIH has an ambitious new programme aiming to reach 1,000 adults and children with antiretroviral (ARV) treatment by the end of 2007. PIH is placing great emphasis on preventing more HIV positive children being born, and ensuring that those infants and children who are infected receive the care they need.
EJAF, in collaboration with MAC AIDS Fund, is supporting the PIH programme’s infant nutrition and supplementary feeding so that 150 babies will not only get the medicines they need, they will be able to thrive on them.
