| ORGANISATION: | CLINTON HIV/AIDS INITIATIVE (CHAI) |
| AREA: | MARAGWA DISTRICT, KENYA |
| GRANT PERIOD: | 2005-2006 |
| BENEFICIARIES: | 3,000 HIV INFECTED CHILDREN |
In 2005 only 1% of the 200,000 children living with HIV in Kenya were on antiretroviral treatment.
The Clinton HIV/AIDS Initiative (CHAI) has been a leading force in the global effort to bring down the cost of adult antiretroviral (ARV) drugs to levels that have at last begun to make them widely available to even the poorest patients in developing countries, and develop low-cost paediatric ARV formulations with which to treat children. The next step for CHAI was to get these drugs to the children who need them and EJAF has supported this phase of their work in Kenya.
In its first year, the programme placed almost 3,000 children on treatment and trained 192 healthcare workers at 87 sites in 7 provinces of Kenya.
The Kenyan government is now covering the cost of treatment for these children. UNITAID has also provided an additional $38 million with which CHAI aims to scale up paediatric ARV treatment to reach over 100,000 children by the end of 2007.
