THE
FOUNDATION
AT WORK

ORGANISATION:STUDENT AWARENESS FORUM (BIJAM)
AREA:PARSA DISTRICT, NEPAL
GRANT PERIOD:2006-2009
BENEFICIARIES:20,000 PEOPLE

BIJAM has been working in Birgunj, a large Nepali-Indian border city, since 1995. It was originally established by students who recognised a gap in the HIV/AIDS information being provided to local high risk groups such as sex workers, truck drivers and rickshaw pullers, migrant workers and young people.

EJAF has funded the organisation though its small grants programme to run two existing drop in centres and establish a third. The drop in centres are specifically targeted at the vulnerable groups listed above and sited and run accorded to their needs.

They not only provide HIV/AIDS information and condoms in a safe and non judgemental space but also provide counselling, primary medical care and and referral to STI & HIV testing services. In addition the programme aims to create peer based behaviour change initiatives which will reach beyond the confines of the centres including a sexual health advice and information hotline.
