| ORGANISATION: | CLINTON HIV/AIDS INITIATIVE (CHAI) |
| AREA: | DNIPROPETROVSK, UKRAINE |
| GRANT PERIOD: | 2007-2008 |
| BENEFICIARIES: | 345 HIV POSITIVE IDU |
Over 70% of Ukraine’s registered 100,000 HIV positive people were infected through injecting drugs with contaminated needles.
It’s vital that these injecting drug users (IDU) get treatment for both drug addition and HIV infection, particularly to stem the flow of HIV transmission from this vulnerable group to the general public.
In a complex new programme, EJAF is supporting the Clinton HIV/AIDS Initiative (CHAI) to work with the Ukrainian Ministry of Health to treat HIV positive drug users concurrently with both antiretroviral (ARV) medication and methadone substitution therapy.
Dnipropoetrovsk, a region of the country particularly badly affected by IDU related HIV, is the test site for this innovative programme. Over 300 drug users in three treatment centres will receive comprehensive drug treatment and substitution therapy in new, single dose methadone form, in the first year.
CHAI hopes that this and their widespread training of healthcare providers will enable 90% ARV coverage nationwide, including widespread access to methadone substitution, by the third year of the programme.
