Prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) is one of the most effective types of HIV interventions, yet each year, more babies are born with HIV in one busy clinic in Africa than in the United States, Canada and England combined.
mothers2mothers (m2m) has developed an innovative model to reduce transmission of HIV from mother to baby. By enlisting HIV-positive mothers (‘mother mentors’) to help guide HIV-positive women through the correct medical processes and practices during their pregnancies, the likelihood of transmission can be minimised. After more than 7 years, m2m have proved the effectiveness of their support and are now at stage where they are replicating and expanding to 645 sites across South Africa, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Rwanda, Swaziland and Zambia. Furthermore, they have been recognised for their success with the prestigious Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship (2008) and Schwab Social Entrepreneurs of the Year (2009) for Africa.
EJAF’s grant of almost £1m is challenging m2m to pilot the most efficient, cost effective ways of making sure every part of their process is leading to a healthy, HIV-free baby, so that each successful element is embedded across all 645 sites and can support 20% of all HIV-positive pregnant woman in need globally.

Mothers Helping Mothers Fight HIV
In sub-Saharan Africa, HIV infections are more prevalent and doctors scarcer than anywhere else in the world. With a lack of medical professionals, Mitchell Besser enlisted the help of his patients to create mothers2mothers - an extraordinary network of HIV-positive women whose support for each other is changing and saving lives.
